Londoner Mike Gold is the prospective Green candidate for Walthamstow, where he lives. Most of his working life has been in the travel industry, and he's spent time in Holland, Greece, Ireland and South Africa as well as the UK. He has a degree in Environmental Science and is active in Occupy.
His website, www.radicalsoapbox.com underlines many of the problems facing our society today - the privatisation of the NHS, lack of affordable housing, the myth of neo-liberalism and austerity, tax avoidance, fracking and the proposed disastrous TTIP agreement.
Originally a member of the Labour Party, he became disillusioned with their policies and believe that the Green Party today embodies many of the old Labour values.
He strongly disagrees with those who maintain that voting Green is a wasted vote in the current first-past-the-post system. He believes that given the anger and impotence that many voters currently feel, getting Green candidates elected is a very real possibility in this forthcoming election. The Greens do offer a genuine alternative!
He believes that the mainstream political parties are simply helping the rich get richer while the poor get poorer. This planet belongs to everyone, he says, it's not there for the 1% to destroy. Now is the time for the 99% to take their planet back!
Rise like Lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you -
Ye are many – they are few.
From 'The Masque of Anarchy' by Percy Byssche Shelley (1792-1822)
