Christmas maybe the time of peace and goodwill to all mankind but it is a shame that this does not apply to animals too. Sadly, animals are often the victims of our over indulgence at Christmas – around 10 million turkeys are killed for Christmas as well as other animals such as pigs, cows, chickens, geese, ducks, pheasants and others. The majority of these are factory farmed in an inhumane and cruel way.
As well as being cruel to animals, industrial farming is very destructive to environment. As well as causing pollution, the meat and dairy industry contributes more of the greenhouse gases that are causing climate change than transportation. To cut down on meat would be a compassionate resolution for the New Year, there is also a pledge to go vegan for January – www.veganuary.com.
