Greens support protest against Iceland selling Kangaroo meat

21 March 2015

Waltham Forest & Redbridge Green Party supported the Waltham Forest Animal Protection group demonstration on Saturday March 14th to highlight the cruelty involved in the production of kangaroo meat. Sadly kangaroo meat is being sold by the supermarket Iceland and the demonstration was outside their store in Walthamstow. It was part of Viva!'s National Weekend of Action against Iceland selling kangaroo and other ‘exotic’ meats.

Millions of kangaroos are shot every year in Australia with many being mis-shot and dying a slow agonising death. Hundreds of thousands pouch young babies are also ripped from their dying mothers and smashed on head or decapitated. Their older siblings will flee and invariably die a slow death without the protection of their mother. This massacre of kangaroos is being driven by money and it is the product of this cruel industry that Iceland sells in its stores.

The demonstration got good support from members of the public who were often horrified to learn of the cruelty of the production of kangaroo meat and that Iceland were selling it. People were encouraged to boycott Iceland until it stops supporting this barbaric trade.

“We support this protest and condemn the massacre of kangaroos for their meat” said Mark Dawes of Waltham Forest & Redbridge Green Party “and I hope Iceland stop selling this cruel product as soon as possible” he added.
