As the Waltham Forest & Redbridge Green Party candidates at last week’s General Election, we wish to offer a massive ‘thank you’ to everyone who voted for us, and to all the town hall staff whose hard work ensured the smooth running of the counts on election night.
Respect is due to the thousands of those who, under extreme pressure to vote for either Labour or the Tories, put their mark by our names, in order to challenge whichever of the ‘big two’ crawled over the line to form the next government.
A vote of thanks must also go to all of our members and supporters who fought a tremendous campaign, which saw us quadruple our vote share, beating the Lib Dems in three of our local constituencies and coming close to doing so in the other two. 5% of the vote is needed to keep our £500 deposit - we did this for the first time ever, in not just one but TWO constituencies - Leyton and Wanstead and Walthamstow. Thanks again for the hard work everyone put in: well over a hundred people volunteered, some across many areas and for huge amounts of time
We can now look forward to overtaking the Conservatives in one or two of these seats in future elections, and to hold both them and the Labour Party to account, during what is sure to be another five years of austerity hardship.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the local media for extensive coverage of hustings and other events during the election campaign, so that local people were able to make an informed choice in the polling booth.
Leyton & Wanstead - Ashley Gunstock 2,974 votes 7.3%
Walthamstow - Michael Gold 2,661 votes 6.4%
Chingford & Woodford Green - Rebecca Tully 1,854 votes 4.2% (Read her Thank You message here)
Ilford South - RoseMary Warrington 1,506 votes 2.9%
Ilford North - David Reynolds 1,023 votes 2.1%
