In October 2017 there were:

  • 1,077 empty homes in Waltham Forest.
  • 882 empty homes in Redbridge

Local authorities have just been given the power to double council tax on empty homes. In response to the EndEmptyHomes campaign, all of our candidates have pledged to take action if elected and double council tax on empty homes.

Andrew Johns, the Green Party candidate for the High Street ward in Waltham Forest says "The number of empty homes in the boroughs of Waltham Forest and Redbridge is a disgrace. We need to discourage the buying of properties as investments, which causes house prices and rents to rise, creating uncertainty and worry for many, and in some cases even leading to homelessness.

"But when there are nearly 100 councillors in London alone with links to the property business, can they really be trusted to do the right thing?"
