Waltham Forest and Redbridge residents should back Heathrow protests

Walthamstow resident Melanie Strickland’s recent actions in the Plane Stupid protest deserve praise from residents of Waltham Forest and Redbridge.

Our local residents have recently been fighting their own battle against London City Airport plans to boost capacity from 3.7m per year today to 6m passengers in 2023. The proposals would cause an increase in aircraft noise and have a significant, destructive impact on the local area.

Indeed, even the Mayor and the GLA opposed the proposals, a decision they now have to defend at a public enquiry next March, to the tune of a 525k. It would be hypocritical of us not to support similar opposition from residents of West London over Heathrow expansion, especially as it could well set a precedent for further expansion in the future on both sides of London.

While Heathrow may seem far away, it’s fair to say that expansion of Heathrow will still have a detrimental effect on Waltham Forest and Redbridge. A holding pattern puts Heathrow-bound traffic above us, bringing with it increased noise and air pollution, already above EU legal limits. The proposed benefits of increased trade would serve only big corporations rather than small businesses, forcing down production costs and more pushing small traders out of business. All told, it would further destroy local communities in their endless chase of more profits.
