Campaigns Coordinator, Mark Dawes, on the recent decision to expand London City Airport:
The Government’s decision to allow the expansion of City Airport is terrible news for residents of East London. This follows Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan’s cancellation of the previous mayor's objection to City Airport expansion, and shows both Labour and the Tories are putting Big Business interests ahead of the quality of life of the residents of our area.
City Airport is already making residents of Leyton, Leytonstone and Wanstead's lives a misery with the excessive noise pollution of its air traffic. The decision earlier this year to introduce concentrated flight paths over this area has already increased the noise, and expansion will only make this worse, by raising the number of take-offs and landings at the airport from 70,000 a year to 111,000.
It is madness to site a major airport in the heart of a city. City Airport was originally for small aircraft - its continuing expansion without the consent of local residents is a clear case of putting the greed of Big Business over the interests of the people of East London. It is particularly noticeable in summer when people are in their gardens and cannot have conversations when planes are flying overhead: this is now becoming almost continuous. It is also crazy that the UK is continuing airport expansion at a time when climate change is the most serious issue facing us.
Theresa May began her Premiership by saying her vision of the country is one that “works not for a privileged few, but for every one of us”. With this decision she has shown that her Government is in fact working for the privileged few at the expense of everyone else and is returning the Conservative Party to being the Nasty Party of old.
