A letter on improving pedestrian safety at Charlie Brown's Roundabout from Barry Cooper, a member of Waltham Forest & Redbridge Green Party and Redbridge resident.
The warning signs at Charlie Brown's roundabout have been there for a long time. Speed on the roundabout seems to be paramount, and having the ability of getting from A to B in the fastest time possible. This creates, as we have also seen at Redbridge roundabout, bottlenecks and accidents. Giving way to others is a forgotten concept, and unfortunately, as there are no pedestrian crossings, people are forced to take their life in their own hands every time they cross the road.
Clear notices by the council to both pedestrians and drivers, such as 'Kill Your Speed, Not Pedestrians' would go some way to help, plus a local police presence on both roundabouts. Taking the council's financial constraints into account, this is probably the most we can expect, although hardly adequate.
